Despite its obscure location in the middle of a industrial estate at Block 27 Sin Ming Road (behind Block 26), #01-174, Sin Ming Industrial Estate Sector A, Singapore 575680, there were hordes of people here! You definitely need to make reservations any day of the week, to avoid the disappointment of being turned away even when you are so close to savouring their wonderful food.
Thanks to my sister who called a week ahead, we managed to get a good table in the airconditioned section. Sorry about my shaky photo, was really tired from not eating the entire day in anticipation of the feast. | Here a much better photo of the section we were in. The staff were really alert too, as they spotted two birthday cakes my dad was carrying and offered to help chill it. |
Sitting back, I spied the interesting use of egg cartons to cover their ceiling. I guess it helps to dampen the loud conversations of the diners... If not, then it makes for really quirky decor. | Their table of yummy food was outside, and at first, I thought I had to head outside to check their menu, but a waiter appeared with the menu and a tip: check in on Facebook and get a free lime juice. My entire family checked in and we got 6 glasses of thirst quenching lime juice for free. What a fantastic marketing strategy! I loved their decor concept as well, and felt the orange chosen for their wall made everything feel warm and inviting. Also, the juxtaposition of vintage furniture and poster prints was very interesting. Chairs were comfortable and the table had a lazy susan for easy reach of the food. |
The first dish to arrive after about 7 to 8 mins was the hokkien prawn noodle special. In a delicious seafood sauce, it was full of prawn, squid and the yummiest fried lard. This is my favourite noodle here. | Next, vegetable was brought to our table in quick succession. This baby kailan is out of this world yummy. Blanched slightly before stir-frying in a oil reminiscent of lard, the crunch, texture and taste was perfect. |
This crab came next - I am still wondering how they managed to cook it so fast, as it their baked garlic crab. I think they baked the garlic but deepfried the crab. It was really yummy though, and the garlic was roasted beautifully. The garlic tasted like a root vegetable, without the pungent garlic fumes. The chili crab they serve is full of flavour and not too spicy, even for me. I enjoyed every morsel of the sauce, and liked the extra touch of egg that went into the sauce at the very end. Made without the usual peanuts, this chili crab was fantastic. There was enough roe for me too, and I think they chose which crab to be done in which way really well. That explains why the baked garlic crab didn't have much roe. I liked the sauce so much I was tempted to "tabao" (doggy bag), but decided against it in the end - my dad said by the time I reach home, the sauce would probably taste different. This is a definite winner and a style I would order again for sure. | The flesh of the crab was firm and sweet, a good contrast with the tasty roasted garlic. My only complaint for this was that there wasn't much "roe" on the crab. Here's another photo from a different angle so you can see the crab better. Definitely not a baked crab though it is accompanied by baked garlic! I am not a great fan of beehoon, but this one was quite tasty. I think the magic of this place is their amazing sauces and spices. The Boss beehoon was fried in a dark sauce and clumps were it was over-fried on purpose. The noodles still had a good bite to it, and the vegetables helped to give it a good kick as well. |
This has to be the best tasting salted egg yolk crab ever! There was a hint of sweetness in the salted egg yolk, and with this meaty crab, it was went very well indeed. We took advantage of the buy 2 get 1 free promotion, and each crab looked to be around 600g-700g. What a feast! The 5 adults eating the 3 crabs were all fully satisfied with the portions. |
Headlining our dinner - US Black Angus Ribeye Steak and Heart Attack Fried Rice!
You really have to try their beef, it is done to perfection according to the doneness preferred, and it comes with what seems to be claypot rice made with the rich oils from the beef. At $12 per 100g, it is one of the most pricey items on its menu - it is more than worth it though! | Didn't get a good shot of this, but then again, it's rice, which I am sure you know. :) The grains were well oiled and not stuck together - I also enjoyed the slightly crunchy bits tat were over fried slightly. This is really really good, even eaten on its own, and the fragrance of the oils from the beef sits nicely on the palate. |
