Ah Lai White Curry Noodle VS MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle

5/13/2014

After the review of MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle, one of my facebook friends suggested that I should try Ah Lai, as it is even better!

I decided to do a taste test, using the same amount of water and the same pot too. The only variable was the packets of noodles.

The results were amazing...my friend, Anabelle and I reached a similar verdict - both were equally good, but the curry for Ah Lai is BETTER! It's a true white curry which is tasty, with a full body and enough coconut cream! As some friends say, enough Lemak and lemon grass is very important for good curry.

I bought both packets of noodles in Malaysia, in a provision shop in Genting, for the same price of 10.90RM for 4 packets.

The packaging is quite similar, I wonder who created the white curry noodles first! I did a search on Ah Lai, and realized it is marketed under Fa.E.Fa ( Fa Yi Fa! ), but the main company is Nam Seng. To find out who created the noodles first, I checked out their Halal Certs ( It was the easiest way to check as there was no information about Ah Lai anywhere online. ) MyKuali came first, followed by Ah Lai, as seen in the later expiry date of Ah Lai's halal certificate.

Ah Lai White Curry Noodle

Picture
The dried noodles came with 3 packets of 1) Chili Paste 2) Powdered Coconut Cream 3) Seasoning Granules

A lovely creamy texture resulted, with a lovely thick soup and tantalizing aroma. Slightly sweet with bits of lemon grass and candlenuts.
Picture
Ah Lai's White Curry Noodle has real lemon grass, candlenut, curry leaves, galangal, fried onions and DRIED SHRIMPS in its chili paste, which is what a proper curry paste has. Fresh ingredients.

MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle

The dried noodles came with 3 packets of 1) Chili Paste 2) Non Dairy creamer ( Not Coconut cream ) 3) Seasoning Powder

The soup was a little thin and on the salty side, with great noodles that were both soft and springy at the same time.
Picture
MyKuali uses Shrimp Paste, Curry Powder, Chili Powder, Fish seasoning Powder - alot of their ingredients are powdered and not made fresh.

Verdict: I prefer Ah Lai's White Curry Noodles to MyKuali, as eaten side by side, the difference is very evident. Ah Lai's White Curry tastes like real curry, and it has this whole mouth feel that lasts for the next hour or so, with bits of lemongrass stuck on your teeth. MyKuali is alot saltier, and it feels like the powdered curry that it is. However, noodles from MyKuali had a better texture which felt like a good Ramen, while noodles from Ah Lai were soft and slightly soggy.

Annabelle preferred the noodles from MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle with the curry from Ah Lai. I felt Ah Lai's White Curry Noodles were better, as I like soft noodles swimming in creamy curry, Sedap! Also, the sight of red chili oil floating on top of the MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodles was quite scary compared to the creamy yellow of Ah Lai's White Curry Noodles.

Now where can you get it? You can now order both online, at their respective sites!

I totally agree. I first tried My Kuali and was quite disappointed and didn't know what all the hype was about. Then someone mentioned Ah Lai's. So I tried Ah Lai's White Curry Noodle and it is superior. It is seriously good! I will have to buy more packets before they run out :)
