Adventures with the Silver Chef - Latte E Miele Artisan Gelato

1/28/2014

When Ian Low of the Silver Chef Fame invited me out for a food tasting, I was really excited to meet him in person at last. I've been following his awesome food photos and interesting writeups for quite a while already, and when he posted about his songwriting on the ipad, I knew I had to meet him for real.

Fortunately, I was given the chance to learn more, and we met at a quaint ice cream parlor with the most amazing savoury waffles - Latte E Miele Artisan Gelato.

Ian Low is probably the only person in the world who composes songs using only the ipad and no other tradditional instruments, do check out his music here....I love the instrumental ones especially. Ian also writes beautifully, did I mention that earlier? He's reviewed the Latte E Miele Artisan Gelato outlet at Turf City already - almost on the same day as the food tasting. If you check his blog out, you will be treated to his music, and if you want to download and keep the songs, they are available both on Android and on iTunes. Ian has created an entire pop Album, entitled "Broken Earth" on the ipad.

Strangely, I didn't take any photos with Ian that day, but I did capture him in action, at work. As a full time composer, singer and blogger, he seems really passionate about all he does, including photography on his iphone.

Someday I'll start a new blog category about the interesting people that I get the chance to meet, but right now, let's get on to the review of one of the yummiest gelato I've had in a long time, and the best service staff in ANY outlet.

Latte E Miele Artisan Gelato - Passion and creativity in a single scoop

Rarely do I step out of my comfort zone, but I am really glad that Ian Low invited me out for a tasting at The Grand Stand, formerly known as Turf City, formally the real track for horse races in Singapore.

It was a little difficult to find it, but all stress melts away once you are in Latte E Miele Artisan Gelato. I was greeted by Marlon, whom I first mistook for the owner, as he was such a happy server, and so knowledgeable about everything on the menu. He had great initiative and even offered water to accompany the Irish Affogato that I ordered.

$7 for the Irish Affogato was really affordable, especially when it comes with a shot of Irish Cream. The ice cream is usually vanilla, but I asked for a different flavour so that I could taste as many flavours of Gelato as possible.

The espresso smelt amazing, and I could nearly float away on its perfume. The dash of Irish cream gave a bit of warmth to the coffee and sipping it slowly gave me a feeling of pure bliss. Paired with the gelato made from all natural ingredients with no artificial colouring nor flavours, it was such a yummy start to the adventure that would soon follow.

Gelato in the Gelateria

What is Gelato? According to Latte E Miele Artisan Gelato, “Gelato”, which means “frozen”, is Italy’s answer to ice cream. In the northern part of Italy where the weather is cooler, gelato tends to be dairy-based and revolves around nuts and chocolate.  Down south, the warmer weather has led to a preference for the use of fruits in gelato. This type of gelato, otherwise known as sorbetto, is water-based and therefore icier in texture." They even have an interesting info-graphic about Gelato at their site.

This pistachio Gelato was the best I have ever tasted. It felt like I was eating the pistachio, without the need to crunch nor pry it out of its shell. The Gelato was super smooth and the whole mouth feel was reminiscent of having a blob of butter in your mouth, without the oil and with the full flavour of pistachio. This is presented in their smallest Piccolo cup, but it felt like a lover's size, enough for 2.

Just to show in the difference in cup size. They also have small and large take home packs available, so it really depends on what is preferred. Piccolo means you get to choose your favourite flavour, and Grande means you can choose 3 flavours - how wonderful!
Picture
Next we had the Grande - a maximum of 3 flavours fits in this, and it feels like 3 - 4 people can savour this together. Their portions seem much larger than the usual I've been getting. The three flavours chosen this time was Strawberry, Mint and Lavender White Chocolate. For Strawberry Gelato, they use the freshest fruit puree. Mint was extraordinary too, with a fresh mint flavour. Lavender was out of this world - you feel immediately calmed by the Gelato, which is made from lavender flowers, not extract, and you can see a hint of the light purple lavender flowers...the flavour was not overpowering though, so you can still enjoy the white chocolate base.

Waffles with Gelato - less fattening!

Picture
Besides just coffee and Gelato, Latte E Miele Artisan Gelato also serves great waffles. Biting into my first waffle topped with ice cream, I was amazed by the full egg flavour. Many establishments don't put egg into their waffle mix due to the cost and also due to the fact that egg in the batter means you have to put the batter in the chiller - egg also makes the waffles spongy and less crisp. The waffles here are deliciously crisp on the outside and soft and spongy on the inside. Paired with the vanilla ice cream with real vanilla pods, the taste of this fabulous combination will make you feel like you are somewhere in Europe, away from all that is familiar. If you close your eyes you may even be transported to a Enid Blyton story. But I digress, the waffle with Gelato, drizzled with chocolate sauce was fantastic.

Marlon with the freshly made waffle. Both service staff were friendly and took initiative with everything - a refreshing burst of good service! Apparently they are friendly with everyone, as some customers were calling both by their names. It is really comfortable sitting in the cafe, watching the world go by, and with the amazing service, it was even better! Did I mention that there is free WiFi here too?

Must TRY! Waffle Sandwich

Picture
Beastly Bacon! Yummy Waffle Sandwich! The cheese melting over slices of crisp turkey bacon and fresh lettuce was simply yummy...and a sunny side up egg topped all that. I loved the waffles and the combination of the slightly salty bacon
Picture
Look at the amount of toppings given. Simply yummy, and it makes a good meal for two. I believe Latte E Miele Artisan Gelato is the only ice cream cafe offering the savoury waffle sandwich, and they have three flavours available.
