You can buy WIFI! You can buy WIFI! I usually get the cup noodle and a fruit cup on Scoot flights as it would only be $7.50. As for a cup of ice, and you get the cup noodle, an iced apple juice and fruit to boot! What a great deal! Check out my other post about the speed and reliability of the WIFI on Scoot!

I was really excited when I realized I can actually surf while flying! My last experience with this was in SQ, but at that time, (like more than 10 years back) the wifi connection was slow and lagged so much I was more frustrated than delighted. So what are the results like? Being a techie, I did a speed test immediately to find out how fast my connection is. Was a tad bit disappointed at first, but we must have been flying through a patch of poor signal, because when I pressed the Test button again, it worked! Ping worked, which means that I am able to reach the servers! Download speed is decent, but how about the upload speed? Upload speed is kind of important for my as I am updated the blog post now, while on Scoot's Boeieng 787 Dreamliner. What an apt name! Tada! The results are back! While the speeds are decent, don't expect blazing fast. This is very much like a 3G connection, enough to surf by, enough to even watch videos with, but a tad bit laggy. I am happy though, as this is light years from my last connection to the Internet while flying! Happiness! Wifi for one hour is 11.95usd for one hour, 16.95usd for three and 21.95usd for 24 hours. This is definitely useful on a longer flight, and more worthwhile too. It's a pity I am flying from Bangkok to Singapore, which is only for 2 hours!
This post was done entirely on an iphone, and on board of the scoot flight which allowed me internet access in the air! During the hot months of April and May, the price of Durians drop dramatically as there is a huge surge in supply. Suddenly, you will see durian stall spring up all over Udonthani, and every stall owner will tell you that their's is the best. However, that is not true, and in Udonthani, once they slice open the durian, it is yours. Even if it not ripe or too hard, you have to pay for the experience of watching them slice up the durian like it's a papaya, and expertly open it up like a huge thorny flower. Fortunately, at the wholesale market, your durian is only 70baht per kg during this season, and it would set you back only by 150-180baht per durian. Tip: Go to the wholesale fruit and vegetable market for your durian fix, 3 large durians weighing 7kg in total will set you back by about 500baht. Talad Mueng Thong is located next to Makro, a supermarket that sells items in bulk so you save quite a lot if you shop once a week or for a large family. If you are buying durian during the tapering of the season, durian can cost 300baht for a small durian weighing slightly more than one kg! Durian season is also the hottest time of the year, so be sure to drink plenty of water sprinkled with salt after eating durian. Some Thais believe that the durian is packed with vitamins and minerals, and if you can go on a durian diet, you will lose weight. All Thais believe you can't have alcohol after eating durians, and most will have some stories to tell about a friend's friend dying after having durian and whisky. So how does the most famous Thai Monthong Durian taste like if it is of the right quality and ripeness? It should be slight sweet, aromatic and slightly crunchy. The smell of Thai durians is usually not very strong, as they are eaten when just ripened, not overly so like how we like it in Singapore and in Malaysia. Thai durians are usually enormous compared to the Malaysian counterpart, and most Singaporeans and Malaysians don't like Thai Durian as we think it is very bland and hard. Newsflash: Durian that is not ripe or "too young" is hard, crunchy and bland. Durian that is just ripe is slightly crunchy on the outside, soft in the inside and creamy with a bit of fibre. Usually sweet, sometimes it has a slight bittersweet flavor too. The Thais usually sell the overly ripened durian at a rock bottom price as they don't like their durians soft and squishy. I'm Singaporean, so I went round buying up the super cheap, super soft and tasty bittersweet creamy durian I love! Driving up from Udonthani, you will see alot of sights along the way. I went a temple situated at the foot of a granite mountain, and found this lake in the middle of the mountain. A lovely restaurant was there, and the food was cheap and delicious. They have freshwater fish (Pla Nim) in the lake, and the owners would fish and place the fish they caught in a net, harvesting the fish whenever there is an order for it. The fish looked alot like Tilapia, but where the Tilapia is white in Singapore, it is grey in Thailand. A very popular fish suitable for baking in salt, steaming, cooked in soup, made into a salad or deep fried, it is delicious and cheap. It is also used as a natural control against mosquitoes, as it eats mosquito larvae. It is pretty amazing in Udonthani, as you really don't know what you will see in some forgotten corner. I wish I could tell you how to find this place, but I can't, you will just have to look out for a weather beaten sign made of wood and drive down a steep slope to get to it. It would be on the left if you are headed to Udon from Ban Phue. Update: I managed to find its address from the GPS coordinates embedded in the photo! To find out how to do this too, check out: http://www.chanchop.com/get-techie/how-to-find-location-using-a-photo 2348, Tambon Klang Yai, Amphoe Ban Phue, Chang Wat Udon Thani 41210, Thailand Look out for the highway number 2348 as you drive up towards Ban Phue, and you should be able to find the restaurant easily. The name of the restaurant is Pla Pao Khao Khat I am always on the look out for cheap hotels in Bangkok - I thought I found the best deal at Sasha House already, but since I was going to just check in at 3am, I decided to find a even cheaper hotel and pray it would not be a disaster. I found this hotel, the " all together suite " on the app, bookings.com and it was perfect! Just 135 baht via taxi away from the main airport, 95 baht away from the domestic airport and 75 baht away from Pratunum, it was literally at the center of all the places I wanted to head to. The best and easiest way to find a hotel is via app, and I used booking.com. This is how it looks like! Allowing the app to access my location was one of the best things ever, as all the hotels near me appeared automatically in the search. However, I wanted to check in on 30th Nov at midnight and stay till noon on the 1st of Dec, so I made sure to do the booking while I was still in Singapore, on the 30th of November before midnight. The app does not have an option for you to book for a midnight or after check in till check out on the same day. The menu is pretty easy to navigate and you can create an account so that all your past bookings and places you have viewed will be stored. Do try it, you never know what gem you will find! |
