Walking from Mapletree Business Park where my gym is, I saw a lovely orange glow above Pasir Panjang Mrt and couldn't resist taking a shot.
The smell of barbecued meats and seafood started wafting over as I arrived at Pasir Panjang Food Center. I came here thinking of having the fantastically cheap thai food, but ended up with a feast.
I would usually eat at the stalls on the right, but today, I decided to try the stalls on the left due to the sheer amount of people sitting on the right. Heading to the left of this enormous signboard, I was pleasantly surprised with the selection of food there.
I ordered the first course which is also the main, rice with basil pork and egg, before spying the fruit rojak in the corner. This Thai food stall has a cook who used to be a Chef in Thailand and in Singapore before setting out to open this food stall on his own. His wife is Singaporean, but the lady in the picture above is his helper at the stall. The chef also cooked for the Thai Princess, and you can see some clippings of that event at his stall. Pad thai, rice with basil pork and more are just $4.50 each.
Fruit Rojak here is delicious, with the prawn paste black sauce nicely mixed with the fruit. Unfortunately, this stall has no name, but it is the only one on the left side of the big "Pasir Panjang Food Center" Sign.
My fruit rojak came chock full of green mango, pineapple, apple, guava, turnip, bean sprouts in a tasty sauce with toasted dough fritters sprinkled over. Lining my plate was my favourite black century eggs paired with the light yellow pickled ginger.
Then the sight of bright lights and wriggling crabs caught my eye. I like this stall because the stall uncle will tell you if the crab is suitable for a certain style of cooking and if it is not, he doesn't sell it. On this occasion I must be very lucky, as he managed to pick out a 600g crab for me!
This is the stall I like best over on this side of the food center. They make amazing salt baked crabs, but you have to wait 30mins for them to be well baked. I choose their chili crab instead, and because of past experience, I implored the tattooed young cook to put less chili so I can actually taste the sauce instead of just the crab.
I was wonderfully surprised! The crab that came was absolutely delicious! I managed to taste the sauce without the fiery chili searing my taste buds this time, and was able to pick out dried ground dried prawns, peanuts, ginger, green and red chili, lemon grass, egg and even this special nut that usually goes into Nonya curries. My sweet meaty crab was 600g and cost $28.80, a steal!
It was so tasty that I decided to zoom in on the crab claw so you get to feast your eyes on it too!
In all, the entire meal was $39.70, including two cans of coke zero ($2.40). I enjoyed the entire meal immensely, and if you ever head west, do check this food center out too!
